Giving Thanks For Dinner Out

Score a touchdown By Athan “Tom” Prakas

If you real want to score a touchdown with your family this year, try hosting your Thanksgiving feast at a restaurant. Thanksgiving weekend has turned into one of the biggest weekends of the year for restaurants and marks the official kick-off “season” for South Floridians.

More and more people go out every year to enjoy this traditional American holiday with their families and friends, taking the burden off of relatives who slave over the stove. Why spend the day in the kitchen when you can enjoy all that Delray has to offer by simply dining out? Area restaurants offer nutritious, traditional and creative Thanksgiving dishes without the hours of planning, shopping, and cooking (not to mention cleaning up. According to research by the National Restaurant Association, more and more people are choosing to dine out on Thanksgiving Day. Here are some interesting facts:

- One in 10 Americans (11 percent) celebrate Thanksgiving Day by dining in one of the nation’s 935,000 restaurants.

- More than half (53 percent) of consumers use restaurant prepared takeout items for all or part of their Thanksgiving DAy meals (from complete holiday feasts, to ready-to-eat turkeys or hams, to side dishes and deserts).

- Year-round 79 percent of American adults say going to restaurants with family and friends is a better use of leisure time than cooking and cleaning up.

Restaurants used to close on Thanksgiving, but the holiday is becoming a strong business day for many establishments. The ambience can be as important as the food, which made me think of Delray Beach’s renowned Sundy House Restaurant. For those of you who haven’t been to Sundy House, it is a charming historic inn and restaurant serving up some great food in a warm and inviting atmosphere which makes you feel relaxed and comfortable. According to Dan Ramos, the executive chef who recently returned to take the culinary helm at the Sundy House Restaurant, “We serve classic, traditional dishes with a twist. Our menu reflects the familiar tastes and aromas that make this holiday a culinary favorite. Our clients are primary locals that bring visiting family and friends to enjoy a truly amazing experience. Thanksgiving Day is one of the season;s most popular events at the Sundy House, and we are traditionally sold-out by mid-October as many guests return year after year.”

As the temperature cools down and the humidity starts blowing out of town, the snowbirds and tourists fly in. This influx of out-of-towners provides the perfect opportunity for Delray restaurant to show off our beautiful hometown and what makes it special. You can even take that very traditional, and sometimes necessary, after-dinner stroll down Atlantic Avenue to work off some that pumpkin pie. Happy Thanksgiving.
